WOYWW # 143, A Card and Toby Tortoise's life Story

Morning everyone,

How is your week going? Very fast like mine??? Lots to say today so onto photos

This was my desk Tuesday night before I put away all my toys ready for next time I am able to play! Not much on there a few new bits of stash, some cheap Kanban stamps I got from hobbycraft, love a bargain! In the little red basket on the marker storage is lots of pre-coloured images, in the small plastic pots on the right is some computer printed sentiments cut out ready to use and the other pot has some bits and pieces of craft knives (new blades etc..) at the back you will see my copic marker list, all the normal things that stay on my desk all the time, ruler, glue, more pens. A few x-cut punches (these are little flower shapes), tissues and laptop, next to me is a small table with my bigshot on, all the different spellbinder dies i used and a million different flowers that i spent over an hour placing onto the card, moving them about and then taking them of again and then didn't use any on the card I made following the sketch over at A Gem of a Challenge.

I would like to enter this card into the following challenges:

Please check out The Stamping Ground and visit our great hostess Julia for details on how you can join in and share your mess/desk/floor/ table work area! and look around lots & lots of other crafters areas getting lots of inspiration, you get to see the most amazing art creations and many different kinds of craft and of course you get to meet some amazing people so give it a go but beware its addictive!

Now on to the story of Toby, I showed you a piccy of our tortoise a couple of weeks ago and lots of you asked questions about him and his obsession with mens boots!– No tortoise was harmed in the making of this and he is very happy and thriving! lol

Toby was given to us about 11 years ago, when his owners moved overseas, he came to us with a couple of toes missing but otherwise in good health, and we were told he was about 11 years old, at the time and we were also told he was house trained (how can you possibly house train a tortoise right!) and given instruction on what he liked to eat and drink.

So he settled in very well and lived in the house with us, Never in a tank, he can wander around (we have a stair gate so he cannot fall down any stairs) he has to have a large shallow dish filled with water that he likes to get in and bath and drink and yes poop whenever he wants and we were told he lived on a diet of soft fruit and salad vegetables, It was spring when he came to us and on warmer days we would take him into the garden, he loved stomping about the patio, hiding in the ornamental grasses, eating the strawberries that would hang over the edges of the plant pots and sitting on the edge on the edge of the bubbling water feature, (as well as getting into his own water).

One day we put him onto the grass (the grass area was not enclosed/safe so we had to keep a close eye on him), and well he started doing a funny little dance thing, we all watched with amazement as he went round and round in circles stomping his little feet it was a tortoise version of river dance! It felt like he had a purpose, and then he started using his front legs to dig!!

I had to find out what he was doing and why, I researched how he lived in the wild and I found out Toby isn’t an everyday/normal pet tortoise, (which are generally Horsfield or Hermann) he is called a 3 Toed Box Turtle he can close both ends tight, so predators cannot get him, I have no idea where his previous owners got him from but we found out he needs lots of special care, so did lots more research and spoke to ‘Tortoise specialists’ and his diet in the wild would have been worms and slugs. Toby was dancing on the grass so that the worms would think it was raining and come to the surface, well we had to help out and make him as happy as possible so tried digging for worms, we tried all kinds of things, getting hints and tips from any where we could, do you know there is worm ‘charming’ competitions! I know! I had never heard of such a thing, but its true. But worms are very hard to catch! So we started buying them, for him from the fishing tackle shop and he loves them! And now has a very good diet of earth worms and soft fruit, (the occasional slug), He soon began to thrive and his skin and eyes glowed and he was/is very active, very fast and he loves climbing, he had put on weight, he is a member of the family. He doesn’t hibernate as such because he is small he can’t eat enough to see him right through winter, but he will sleep for around about month/6 weeks during winter. He has a little cardboard house lined with felt, in the corner with a ‘proper’ heat mat for the colder months.

A couple of years went by and then he reached puberty!!! One day we came home to find he was ‘mating with my hubby’s boots that had been left in the kitchen, (Shocked or what!!!) he soon became obsessed with boots and men’s shoes and will chase around the room trying to ‘mate’ with your shoes, and can be a right nuisance and it can be very embarrassing, (try explaining to a 5 year old why Toby wants to play with Daddy’s shoes) he will try to ‘mount any shoe he finds attractive, he will stay there for hours if we let him, so no shoes allowed in the house. However occasionally when hubby forgets and leaves his boots on after being in garden or if he leaves them in the kitchen, this is what happens:

(Now for the serous bit – 3 toed tortoises are difficult to look after, you have to give them lots of care and a wide, careful variety of food, he has to have the correct living environment and are not really meant to be pets, We care for him very much and have spoken to specialists and continue to keep his conditions as perfect as we can, he is a good weight and very healthy, but I would not recommend anyone keeping tortoises for pets, they look very cute but need special care and can be expensive for equipment, vet bills, when he first came to us he did not have the correct diet and the vets think that could be why he lost some of his toes)

Hope you enjoyed looking round my desk and sharing the story of Toby - sorry for such a long post!

Have a great WOYWW. Hugs Lou xxx

Rudolph Day Cards

I thought Rudolph Day was a brilliant idea, the 25th of each month named after the Red nosed reindeer, so that when December comes we are prepared and have some of our Christmas cards made, Sandra from Stamping For Pleasure came up with this and has a linky on her blog for us all to add our cards too and join in. I was determined to join in this month and I managed to get 2 Christmas, both the same but its 2 of my huge long list, very simple using one of my favourite Christmas stamps from Sugar Nellie Snow Family

12cmx12cm. card stock, image Coloured with Pro-markers with some glitter and stickles, a snowflake punch and a few little pearls and 2 done 150+ to go
Thanks for the inspiration and 'nudge' to join in Sandra

Now for something completely different !

Hello Everyone, Have you had a good weekend? I was well enough to play so made a card!!

In my Yuku craft group a couple of weeks ago we had a die-cut swap and my partner was Becky, Becky sent me an amazing parcel of die-cuts. Lots of Tim Holtz die-cuts, bird cages and keys and lots of lovely stuff.

Because the die-cuts were so different to any I have or have ever used, I decided that over the weekend I must make a card using them. I have never made anything like this before and it is so different to ‘my style’ of card-making, but I must admit I had fun making it, using all the different techniques and getting covered in ink, it is far from perfect and I have lots to learn, but Thank you Becky for broadening my mind and stretching my imagination. Its a shame the photo doesn't show, but it all sparkles, the cage, key and lock are a metallic gold & silver and the flowers have been sprayed with glimmer mists, the ribbon is wonky but just ignore that bit lol! It does look better IRL.

However, even though I had lots of fun, I think I will stick to cute!!!!

I Found a few challenges this card follows the rules for so I would like to enter this into these challenges:

CARD CRAFTERS CIRCLE Challenge #10 = Use Die-cuts or Punches

CRAFTS FOR ETERNITY Challenge Recipe # 59 = Lock & Key

Edited to add:
Picked for 0ne of the Top 3 over at Crafts For Eternity - Thank you soooo much

Thanks for looking, Hope you are all well. Lou xxx

I would like to enter this card into these challenges:

Mimosa With Hat Card, And Hello New Friends

Good Morning Everyone

A HUGE HELLO, welcome and Thank you, to my new followers I can’t believe (neither can Hubby!) That I have 40 followers.

THANK YOU to you all, for taking the time to leave me such wonderful comments, encouragement and support, As you all know I have ME and various other medical problems, (some days I am unable to use my laptop, sitting in an upright position is sometimes impossible) So I find it really difficult to get round to all of your blogs and leave comments, I try to visit you all and leave you comments, but not nearly as much as I would like to and I am really sorry about this, I would love to be able to visit you all daily and leave comments but this is not possible and I hope that you understand.

I cannot Thank you enough for the kind comments you leave me, I read every single one and it means an awful lot to me..

Enough ‘waffling’ , here’s my card with the lovely new stamp, (another image that I coloured the other day!) Bildmalarna, Mimosa with Hat

(I can't find my list with the details of what copics i used or BP, if I find it I will edit this post! Sorry!) The doily is a ‘proper’ paper doily, you can get 60 in the £1 shop and the smallest size is perfect for a 6x6 card, they are very delicate, so had to brush the ink pad over gently, but it adds some texture and I quite liked the look. The bench is an image i coloured months ago I believe it is a Magnolia Bench!

I would like to enter this card into the following Challenges:

CRAFTS AND ME CHALLENGES # 68 = Use A New Image

CRAFT US CRAZY # 20 = Anything Goes

CRAFTY SENTIMENTS = lets Get Girly

SEW MANY CARDS Challenge # 80 = Birthday (I haven't added a birthday sentiment but it will be a Birthday card, Promise!)

THE CRAFTY PAD Challenge # 157 = The Letter B (bench!)

Before I go I must give a mention to Feline Playful, they list all the crafty challenges and the winners every day, I am sure you all know about it but I doesn’t hurt to mention it and say Thank you to the wonderful Team, for the vast amount of work they must do to keep this blog up and running

Thank you all for visiting me, Hope you are enjoying your weekend

Friday Fun - Decopatch and a new stamp

In my previous post i told you about the decopatch I had done this week, so decided to show a better picture, it is a lot of fun.
The Decopatch Place has lots of papers and shapes and tutorials and is a nice bright easy to use web site. I now have a small collection of papers and lots of glue so will be doing more of this!

Not had a great week health wise so not much craftiness happening in my space, however did get lots of fabulous new goodies, ready for when i feel better.

This is a new stamp I got this week From Bunny Zoe's Crafts
called Mimosa Hat by Bildmalarna coloured her with copics ready to add to a card.

Both The decopatch Place and Bunny Zoe's Crafts give impressive service and my products arrived with days of being ordered, ( I don't work for either company and only say it how i find it!)

Thanks for looking

WOYWW #140 February 8th

Good morning All, Thank you all for so many wonderful comments and all the visits to my blog, over the past week.  I made it around all of the desks last week and left comments on 99.5% so I was feeling rather pleased with myself, however my poor ME addled brain didn’t like it much at all, so might not manage so many this week!!

I will try and keep my ‘waffling to a minimum today so onto my desk:

Well quite different this week, yes a ltlle bit messy, I have been playing, colouring and getting sticky near the light you will see  some ‘pink’ decopatched items, a little piggy, a heart with a magnet on the back (so it can stick to the fridge) and a box and a large puzzle piece covered and made into a key ring, and a box which is what I planned on doing and ended up doing the rest as well! I bought the decopatch at Christmas along with variousshapes and boxes and a collection of decopatch tissue/papers for myself and my daughter to play with over the holidays, she made some lovely gifts for family and friends, and with half term coming up I would recommend it as a rainy day activity for children, its messy sticky fun but very easy to do,  a little expensive, however buying it direct from  The decopatch Place works out cheaper than Hobbycraft and you can buy single sheets of tissue, you will be surprised just how much you can do with one sheet, you could also make your own shapes or use items boxes/tins/frames that you have at home, It is fun and kids love it!

Also on my desk I have all my everyday tools and my wonderful pens, along with a few ink refills for some copics, a card  made for the lovely craft group I belong to on Yuku, following the sketch that is one of this months group challenges, my small red plastic basket filled with coloured images, Oh and a box of Glimmer Mists I bought in the Hobby craft sale, (I bought a few more things but they are out of view) £2.99 for 4 bottles, ( I love a bargain!) I have never used Glimmer mists before and have no idea what I will use them on but I am sure it will be fun playing.

Lastly, a wonderful new Stickles storage that hubby made me, it was so simple, a visit to B&Q, and a rummage through their wood box, that holds all the odd ends of wood that they sell of cheaply and he found the perfect piece of wood, It cost £1 and at home after finding the correct sized drill bit, he drilled 45 holes into it, it fits into my craft cupboard (old kitchen wall unit) perfectly and it now is my perfect stickle, liquid pearls, and anything else that comes in a similar sized bottle storage, and I have lots of room for more However it looks very plain and boring, so what can I do to it??? I have never altered anything before so any ideas (and instruction) very very gratefully received

Hope you all enjoy your weekly snoop around all the crafty desks/floors/tables or laps and remember to pop Over to The Queen of the desks at The Stamping Ground and leave Julia some love for coming up with the wonderful idea that is ‘What’s on your work desk Wednesdays’
Have a great week and thanks for your visits.

P.s  Nearly forgot ‘a piccy’ of one of my fur babies, unhappy (well sulking really)  because of the snow!

Just For Fun - Practise will make perfect! One Day!

I have been practising colouring images, I still need to practise a lot more! But here are a few of my recent attempts:

This is my first ever attempt with Prisma Pencils

They have all been coloured with copics except this last one, which I didn't think was too bad for a first attempt, obviously still need to practise lots more with all colouring mediums, but i enjoy it and that's why I do it! I have also found that in real life they look 'OK' and look as if they have a 'OK' amount of depth and shadow, but in photos they need much darker shadows, I also have found that i need to learn how to take 'nicer photos' I think I will get there, in the end and in the mean time its fun trying!

Thanks for Looking, Hope the weather isn't causing you too many problems, Be like me, stay wrapped up in the warm 'colouring'!

Thank You My Friend Magnolia Card

This is one of my favourite Tilda’s from Magnolia, when I first saw these stamps I must admit I wasn’t keen on them, but they grow on you and now I have a small collection. I think this is called Sweet Tilda but I am sorry i have no idea what collection it comes from.

I actually made this card a little while ago but haven’t blogged it

(I'm sorry i haven't got any details )

I would like to enter this card into:

STAMPtacular Sunday Challenge #149

Diamonds or Pearls

also

Do You Stack Up challenge # 57 Anything Goes

Diva's by Design Challenge #20 Anything Goes

As you can see i have used pearls, I use a lot of 'pearls' on my cards and usually just buy white ones and colour them with pro-markers or copics.

A HUGE WELCOME to my new followers, i am amazed that i have 30 followers and every single comment means so much to me, the fact that you have taken the time to visit my blog and leave me a comment, touches my heart, and it makes me want to make 'better' cards and to improve my colouring and to expand my techniques so THANK YOU.

Hope you are having a great day

Whats On Your Workdesk? Wednesday #139

Wednesday has come round fast again, but no complaining from me because it means I get to Look (snoop, be nosey) around all the wonderful crafty desk’s and why do I do this I hear you cry, well if you are from Mars and have no idea what I am on about you might cry it but otherwise you will know, because everyone knows it’s WOYWW, you see on a Wednesday Julia from The Stamping Ground, hosts a weekly party that is WOYWW and us nosey crafters can put pictures of our desks/tables/laps/floors, on our blogs and then we all have a good look around other peoples crafty spaces, leave a few comments and enjoy it a lot!!!. Last week I managed 168 desks and left comments on almost all of them, Thank you for all your lovely comments it was lovely to hear from you.

So onto my desk firstly is my laptop, at the back is my little blue bucket with my every day tools in, also at the back is a little glass, my daughter decorated for me many moons ago, and that holds my Sukura pens, my 2 fine tip glue’s, are always on my desk, (I use these all the time) some double sided tape oh a few stamped images and the copics that I haven’t put away from colouring the image on the tiny card in the front, in the wooden box is CD cases filled with the small free sets of stamps you get from magazines, on top of the box my newly acquired blending tool and some distress inks, (got to learn how to use this) and to the left is my ruler and scissors and the remnants of the card I used for the tiny card in the front, so no new crafty stash, no lovely layouts or artistic journals or a wonderful sewing project, no knitting, not much at all really

So I decided after showing my Marker hints and tips book, last week, I would show you another book that is always on my desk.

Card designs are always something I have always struggled with, either lack of mojo, or I just can’t ‘think’ (a problem that many CFS sufferers struggle with) so a couple of years ago whenever I saw a card sketch I liked I would save it to my computer, well that wasn’t much help because I could never find them again, or by the time I had looked at them all, I was either fed up or too tired and couldn’t craft, so I started printing them out and sticking them in a book, In hindsight, I should have printed the sketches much smaller and kept a better record of where they came from and who designed them, and the date I found/printed it, but whenever my mojo is hiding, I look through my book of ‘inspirational sketches’ and I can always find one that suits the situation. Image or design papers, and now I am never stuck for ideas, it sort of gives my brain a little kick and I might turn the sketch around, I might add or take away something, I usually simplify it because I like simple cards, but I am not wonderfully gifted like many of the card makers out there, I cannot look at an image or some papers, and a great card design instantly pops into my head in fact this hardly ever happens, so these great sketches, that wonderful people with lots of skill and talent create, I keep in a handy book, so I am never without a layout idea. It is a huge help and stays on my desk along with my marker hints and tips book.

I also thought I would show you how I store my Spellbinder Dies, as I explained before, my craft room is really my Sons bedroom so when he comes home from university during the holidays I want all my crafting ‘stuff’ to be put away in the cupboards so he can have his bedroom back.

I use Old DVD Cases (again recycling otherwise would be rubbish)

As you can see I have two strips of Magnetic tape stuck on the inside of the case and the sets of dies ‘stick’ to this so aren’t loose, so don’t get lost, and then on the outside of the case I have used copy paper, printed the name of the die set, and a layered the shape (square in this case) and also included the sizes of the dies, to show me what’s in each DVD case –Having the layered shape also helps me know/notice if there is one missing!! I had heard of people using CD cases but I had lots of old DVD cases and thought I would use those and again it works really well for me, the larger rectangle and label dies fit in them and they stack nicely in the cupboard with easy to read labels on the spines.

I hope that by sharing these ideas with you, they might be of help to someone.

I did warn you I can ‘waffle’ on my blog header lol if your still with me, Thank you, :-) pop along to Julia’s and leave her some love, and see how many others have joined in this week.

Thanks again for visiting and for your comments, it really does mean a lot to me that you take the time to leave me a message. Hope you all have a great crafty week.
